Welcome to beautiful Bali…
What do you think of when you think of Bali? For us, it is a land of many contrasts: peaceful verdant rice paddies, tropical beaches and lush rainforests interspersed with famously hectic traffic, bustling crowds and cosmopolitan hustle.

In the midst of one of the busiest tourist hubs of Bali, Seminyak – we have chosen to create an accommodation oasis, a haven, for weary travellers to rest and refresh themselves. Recently we were delighted to host journalist Angie Kelly at our flagship Villa Kubu Seminyak. Angie’s experience with us reflected the satisfaction we hear so often from our guests, you can find her full article here

Relax & Refresh with Us
We understand the restorative power of nature so have designed Villa Kubu, and our sister estate Lataliana Villas to be set amidst tall green trees for clean air and shade. Our gardens are unique, full of species chosen for their environmental sustainability as well as their beauty. We surround our properties with high, solid stone walls – to ensure privacy and to reduce noise pollution. We know our guests want to be in the heart of the Seminyak action: the best spas and shops but when they are done exploring and having adventures during the day, we want them to be able to relax in tranquility at their private Villa.

There is an atmosphere that speaks distinctively of Bali that is carried throughout our Villas and identified by Angie beautifully in her article. She writes of luxurious open air bathrooms with huge rose petal filled tubs, fairylit magical Bali sunset and night scenes and delicious many course meals made just for you by our private chefs. A daybed or covered lounge by your private pool is the perfect place to while away a few hours dreaming or reading. There is no better place on the world to unwind from the stresses of your day to day life and be pampered in an authentically Balinese way.

Have a Unique Experience
At Villa Kubu Seminyak we pride ourselves on providing bespoke accommodation in Bali that caters to you as an individual at every turn. As Angie noted, we are not an impersonal, big name resort. With us everything from your room service to your food preferences is noted and adjusted to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Our friendly, capable staff will even look after you when you are out exploring, making themselves available via whatsapp for recommendations, directions and translations, should they be required.

Make New Friends
We want our guests to become our friends as we believe that is the true meaning of hospitality. Of our 17 villas, 10 can be connected by gorgeous antique wooden doors, meaning larger families or groups of friends can share meals and poolside chilling but also enjoy their privacy with discreet bedroom and living area separation.

Bali is often called the Island of the Gods, it is a place that exudes charm and allure as well as being home to a dynamic nightlife and providing many interesting, exotic activities for the wandering traveller. Off the main road, down a winding lane, full of beauty and mystery, you will find us – just waiting to give you the Bali private villa experience of a lifetime.

I was recently a teacher at Bali Creative; a textile and weaving retreat at Villa Kubu for 30 women from all over the world which included classes in modern tapestry, basketry and embroidery. We arrived in Bali in the middle of the night after leaving a chilly and rainy Sydney afternoon. After a short transfer from the airport the first thing we noticed was the warm steamy Balinese air and it was sweet relief to arrive at Villa Kubu where we were promptly shown to our air-conditioned villas.

The uplit trailing tropical greenery lining the stone walls of the main alleyway had a magical quality and the smell of tropical flowers hinted at the lush gardens we would find inside the villas. As we were led to our various rooms the large carved wooden doors at each entry provided the total privacy. The cool bedrooms were sweet relief with mosquito nets and lush tropical open-air bathrooms each with a freestanding bathtub with rose petals to greet us.We occupied almost the whole resort for five nights.

Villa Kubu provided a fantastic space to accommodate the large group in separate accommodation with central meeting spaces in the teachers villas turned into classrooms for the day. Inside each one, two or three bedroom villa landscaped gardens surround the clean swimming pools, each of which has a thatched roof pergola always stocked with towels and cushions. I personally used this as a comfortable meditation space but I saw people reading, having a drink or getting massage on these throughout the week. The large living areas were the perfect place to have in-room breakfast delivered then spend the day getting creative.

The Spa Venus located inside Villa Kubu kindly sent out their staff to give us an amazing complimentary welcome massage which enticed many people to go back for longer treatments, reflexology, facials and massages for deep relaxation. The central restaurant /cafe provided a welcome feast with cocktails, traditional Indonesian food and dancing plus the much needed coffees that were served for tired weavers!

One of the best things about Villa Kubu for our retreat was its location. It is a short walk through village alleyways to all the best Seminyak cafes and restaurants and just a short taxi ride to the cool bars at the beach plus the best craft and fabric stores of Kuta. The main supermarket was also just a few blocks away. The reception staff are always super friendly and helpful and quick to sort out any problems or bring extra furniture if needed. I had a fantastic time at Villa Kubu – now I just need to find a way to come back with my kids for deeply relaxing family holiday!

Culture Of Balinese Sculpture

The long and storied tradition of Indonesian sculpture captures the imagination of anyone who visits the island of Bali. Dotted among the volcanic mountains, thick jungles, and iconic rice paddies are wooden and stone sculptures of animals, deities, and ancestral heroes. These sculptures are the work of both ancient and modern artisans and add to the magical feeling of the island. Every tribe has a unique sculptural style and every statue tells a unique story. In Bali, you can see the full range of diverse styles of sculpture and may even find an exotic piece to take home as a souvenir of your journey.

Asmat Wooden Sculpture

Perhaps the most recognizable of all Indonesian sculptural art forms are the wooden sculptures. The most famous are the Asmat wood sculptures from Papua. Asmat wood sculptures are found in museums around the world and are characterized by by intricate designs made with simple stone and bone tools. Asmat carvings are usually created as a place for an honored tribe member’s soul to reside after they have left the Earth. The carvings are a communication tool between this world and the next and are lovingly handcrafted with a care and delicacy incomparable to any other style.

The Diversity Of Wooden Sculptural Styles

Other notable styles include the Dayak wooden masks and sculptures that are characterized by their natural elements and abstract patterns that symbolize a range of wishes and virtues they wish to bestow on their family. Another style, the totem-like poles of the Batak and Nias tribes that were used in ancient religious ceremonies and as symbols of power and to bestow blessings. Of all of these styles though, the most elaborate wood carvings can be found in Bali. Mas Village near Ubud is probably the sculpture capital of all of Indonesia and visitors can see brilliant artisans using ancient techniques to create everything from wooden screens to wedding thrones to religions icons.

The Mastercraft Of Stone Sculpture

Stone sculpture is a newer form of sculpture in Bali, flourishing in the 8th to 10th Century. Most of the stone sculptures found on the island are influenced by the religious traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism. These gorgeous stone sculptures are most often found at ancient temples but on the right hiking trail, you can stumble across standalone pieces. Most of the stone sculptures are created with an ashy, grey sandstone quarried from the banks of the many rivers that run through the island. Balinese believe strongly in maintaining their temples, so sculpture is more than just an artform, but also it is a deeply profound religious practice. If you travel to Batubalan or Karang, you can see the master stone carvers at work and observe the great skill and meditative practice of these ancient artisans.

The Sculptures At Villa Kubu

Around the property at Villa Kubu, you can see many examples of the varieties of Indonesian sculpture. From stone sculptures of Ganesh and Narasimha to carved wood totems, pencak silat warriors, and even playful frogs. If you are interested in learning more about Balinese sculpture, take a leisurely stroll around our property and if something catches your eye, ask our helpful concierges to tell you more about the piece and direct you to where on the island you can meet the incredible artisans behind the style. More than anything else, we want to share our incredible culture with you, so we will be happy to help you experience the most beautiful artistic craft on the islands.

bali active volcanoes

If you are looking for a one of a kind, exciting vacation experience, consider adding a volcano tour to your itinerary. Bali has two active volcanoes, Batur and Agung, that are easily accessible by bus, private tour, or even helicopter from Villa Kubu in Seminyak. Bali’s volcanoes offer unparalleled scenic beauty and hold the keys to sacred Balinese cultural beliefs. Whether you are an outdoorsman and want to experience natural wonders of Bali or are interested in learning more about Balinese culture and history, you will love experiencing Bali’s active volcanoes.

Touring Mount Batur

Deep in the lush jungles, surrounded by natural springs, you can find Bali’s most active volcano Mount Batur. Mount Batur is a sacred Hindu mountain and an extremely popular destination for both local Balinese and tourists. We recommend taking the sunrise trek, which is a moderate 2-hour hike to the summit where you will watch the sun rise above the summit while you eat a traditional Balinese breakfast cooked by the steam of the volcano. If you are a really lucky you may see a lava flow from the summit or flank vents. Make sure to also visit Pancering Jagat Temple in nearby Trunyan to see the four-meter statue called “Arca Da Tonta.”

The Pancering Jagat Temple is still an active place of worship and if you are fortunate enough to visit in October, you may experience the Purnamaning Sasih Kapat religious ceremony honoring the many blessings from Mount Batur. At Mt Batur there is also a beautiful lake at the bottom with cold and hot spring healing sulphur water. It’s very therapeutic after climbing the mountain but if you are feeling lazy, just jump straight into the 29 degree hot water and relax for hours. You can cool off in the cool water next door. We guarantee you will never sleep better.
Mount Batur Bali

Touring Mount Agung

The tallest point on the island, Mount Agung’s summit reaches 3,031 meters. Mount Agung is the most important volcano in Balinese culture. The Balinese believe this majestic mountain is the replica of Mount Meru, the center of the spiritual universe. Many Balinese take a scared pilgrimage to Mount Agung to worship at the 1,000-year-old summit temple Pura Besakih, also known as the “Mother Temple.” We highly recommend visiting Pura Besakih for a unique cultural experience. There are over 70 different ceremonies held at Pura Besakih, so you should talk to the knowledgeable concierges at Villa Kubu to schedule the perfect time. There are also two hiking trails to the summit that take 4-5 hours, so they are recommended for experienced hikers, though either can be taken without a tour guide. From the peak you can experience a 360-degree view of surrounding rice paddies, jungles, mountains, and streams. Don’t forget to schedule a visit to a nearby hot springs to relax and feel the stress of life melt away from the bubbling mineral waters.

Experience Balinese Hospitality

At Villa Kubu, we honor the traditions of Balinese hospitality to ensure that you have the best vacation experience possible. If you are considering taking a tour of either of Bali’s incredible active volcanoes, talk to one of our friendly concierges. We can help you design the perfect vacation that includes all the amazing sites on the island. If you have to cancel your trip for any reason, don’t worry. You can still reschedule without losing your money. We offer a 100% vacation credit for one year from cancellation because more than anything, at Villa Kubu we want you to experience the natural wonders of Bali with us.

India is a hot bed of myriad cultures and religions and so is its food. Traditional Indian cuisine encompasses a wide variety of regional cuisines all using aromatic flavours and spices which tickle the palate and arouse the senses. Here at Kubu we know our guests have differing tastes and we aim to give a wide choice of culinary delights, as such we have created a delicious new Indian menu.

Spices grown in BaliSpices grown in Bali
Our Indian dishes have mostly been inspired by the Northern vegetarian influences; think rich aromatic flavours, spicy vegetable dishes, tender slow cooked meat and the use of a plethora of vegetables, fruits, grains and spices making the cuisine vibrant and colourful.

Our new Indian menu offers a range of meat and vegetarian dishes, including curries, tandoori and paneer, complimented with delicious side dishes.

indian-thaliIndian Thali
Highlights from our mouthwatering menu include our spicy Indian asparagus seasoned with black mustard seed and Indian chili powder. Our vegetable curry with locally grown cauliflower, potato and peas is served with freshly made chapatti, add a spicy Indian green bean side dish for the perfect vegetarian meal.

The Raita, lovingly prepared on site is a blend of fresh coriander, plain natural yoghurt, freshly squeezed limes and warm flavorsome cumin. Served with plain paratha, this is perfect as a light refreshing starter.

Kubu offers vegetarian Indian favourites such as Red Dal soup and Yellow Mung Bean Gujarata; a Moong Dal healthy Indian comfort dish prepared from yellow split lentil and garlic, chopped green chillies, dry red chilli, grated ginger and curry leaves served with aromatic basmati rice or a plain paratha.

Another highlight is our Kadhi Gujarati, a reduced plain yoghurt, chick pea flour in crushed green chili ginger paste and dried chili, clove and cinnamon flavoring with paratha bread and paneer fried rice.

And an Indian speciality is our Paneer Fried Rice which combines fried cubed paneer, basmati rice with thinly sliced carrot, capsicum, onion, seasoned with black pepper, soya, chili powder, and garam masala.

Our Thali Plate is the traditional Indian style platter made up of a selection of dishes in smaller portions; Kubu’s signature Thali is made up Gujarati Kadhi (yoghurt and chick peas flour), cucumber coriander raita, Yellow mung bean, crispy rice pops, vegetable Indian fried rice, and paratha bread.

For the meat eaters, we offer chicken, prawn or fish tandoori, slow cooked in the oven to give a rich strong smoky flavor.

The dining experience at Kubu is second to none, and our new Indian menu brings fresh new culinary delights for our guests to enjoy.

All our Indian dishes are home made to order with one day’s notice required.

  13. Starry starry nights. skies– Grab a cocktail and gaze up at the stars. Stargazing in Bali is unique because of little light pollution, so the background is very dark. Don’t miss Scorpios, the brightest star in the Southern Hemisphere with its long, curving tail or the big dipper called Perahu or “boat” in Balinese or Orion. Our mesmerizing sparkling starry nights offer a magical romance and intimacy.
  14. Balian water sourced direct from underneath the volcano Mount Agung. This is simply the most natural mineral water full of goodness and absolutely NO additives.

One of the first thing new visitors to Bali notice is the lushness of nature bursting out of every available space. At Villa Kubu we make sure that each of our luxury villas features nature in all it’s glory. That’s why you’ll find rich green plants and palm trees surrounding each pool, or gentle waterfalls trickling over peaceful rockeries beyond the bath tub.

Whilst our towering palms are perhaps more immediately noticeable, we also love to enliven our villas with beautiful flower arrangements. Because we care about the world around us, we always try to use local, seasonal flowers wherever possible (it’s better for the environment and it means you always get the freshest, best-looking blooms!).

We were recently visited by an old friend of ours, Lana, who grew up in Bali but now lives in London where she runs the go-to flower delivery website called floom.com. She brought her expertise to Villa Kubu, crafting some stunning arrangements for our guests from local and seasonal flowers.

All flowers have been given different meanings and symbolism over the years, and it is always interesting to think of these as you gaze at their beauty. Lana made her bouquets mainly from roses and anthuriums. Of course we all know that roses are symbols of love, but Lana focused on pink roses which are also said to be an expression of gentle elegance. The bright waxy textures of the anthurium are striking in their appearance, and more commonly known as flamingo flowers. With their open, heart-shaped flowers, they have come to symbolise warm hospitality.

She chose to go with an oasis arrangement, to play on the Balinese heritage, but adding a modern edge with the differentiating flower heights. The pastel colour ways allow the deep reds and pinks to pop and add character.

We love the complimentary qualities of the flowers Lana put together for our villas and think they’re the perfect accompaniment to everything we have to offer: a gentle elegance matched with warm hospitality – and as beautiful to experience as a stay in Bali.
